The Young Women’s Alliance (YWA) is an organization devoted to the professional and personal development of women leaders in Central Texas. For more than 20 years, YWA has been a staple in the Austin community, driven by our four pillars: lead, educate, network, and serve. YWA hosts a Monthly Speaker Series that is free for members and welcomes community leaders with inspirational stories and accomplishments.
Join us for the March Speaker Series at Home featuring Virginia Cumberbatch of Rosa Rebellion. The event will start at 6:30 PM on the online venue Airmeet, which gives participants the opportunity to network in one of two ways: by selecting the "speed networking" option and being randomly paired with another attendee for a 5 minute video chat, or by choosing a virtual table and joining that table's video chat. Similar to an in person event, you'll be able to see what YWA members and guests are sitting at each table, and you can choose to join one where friends are, or choose a random table to meet new friends. At 7:00 PM, we will make a few YWA announcements and will introduce our March speaker, Virginia Cumberbatch.
About Virginia:
As a storyteller, racial justice educator and organizer, Virginia’s work sits at the intersection of community advocacy and creative activism. With a heart to elevate the voices of people of color whose stories are often siloed or ignored, she co-birthed Rosa Rebellion, "a platform for creative activism by and for women of color," - creating space for the brilliance and thought leadership of women of color in media, policy and community organizing. Beyond Rosa Rebellion, Virginia supports the development of a culture and ethos of equity for organizations, as a racial justice educator and writer, working with clients such as Bumble, Gensler, lululemon, the Casey Foundation, Bournemouth University, and more.
She is currently serving as a Global Ambassador Board Advisor for lululemon and in 2017 was appointed to the Mayor of Austin's Task Force on Institutional Racism and Systemic Bias. From 2016 - 2020, Virginia served as Director of Community Engagement and Social Equity for The University of Texas at Austin's Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, helping drive the university's vision to become less of an ivory tower, and more of a community anchor addressing issues of access and equity. Given her commitment to disrupt systemic racism and build resources for inclusive practices, she's spoken around the world, including: SXSW, SXSWEDU, TEDX, Q Commons, J.P. Morgan Chase's PowerHer, and the University of Western Australia's Social Impact Conference.
She is the recipient of the 2016 Anti-Defamation League of Austin Social Justice Award, the 2018 Austin 40 Under 40 Award for Civics, Government and Public Affairs, and the Girl Scouts Women of Distinction. In 2013, at just 24 she was named "Person to Watch" by the Austin American Statesman and in 2018 Tribeza named her a "Person of Style" for her work in racial justice and her role as co-author in the publishing of the book, "As We Saw It: The Story of Integration at The University of Texas at Austin,"
She holds a B.A. in history from Williams College and a M.A. in public affairs from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin.
